O segundo domingo do mês de Maio é
conhecido por todos os países que assim o comemoram (África do Sul,
Austrália, Brasil, Chile, China,
Colômbia, Dinamarca, Alemanha, Estônia, Panamá, Grécia, Itália, Japão, Canadá,
Cuba, Países Baixos, Nova Zelândia, Austria, Peru, Suíça, Formosa, Turquia,
EUA, Venezuela) como o Dia das Mães. A origem da
data se deu quando a ativista Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis organizou, no ano de
1865, o Mother's Friendship Days, para que fosse melhorada as condições dos
feridos da Guerra de Sucessão que assolou os Estados Unidos no período.
Porém, sua filha, a metodista Anna Jarvis, foi quem idealizou o Dia das Mães em homenagem à sua mãe Ann Maria, 2 (dois) anos depois de sua morte, no dia 12 de Maio de 1907. Ela criou um memorial à sua mãe e iniciou uma campanha para que fosse reconhecido como um feriado.
No dia 8 de maio de 1914, ela obteve sucesso ao fazer com que fosse aprovado o Joint Resolution Designating the Second Sunday in May as Mother's Day pelo congresso Estadunidense. O Presidente dos Estados Unidos, na época, Thomas Winson proclamou no dia seguinte que no Dia das Mães fossem colocadas bandeiras em todos os edifícios públicos. Assim, essa data foi celebrada, pela primeira vez, no dia 9 de Maio de 1914.
No Brasil, o segundo domingo do mês de Maio foi oficializado como Dia das Mães pelo Presidente Getúlio Vargas, em 1932.

Mother's Day.
The second Sunday of May is known by all countries that do celebrate it (South Africa, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Panama, Greece, Italy, Japan, Canada, Cuba, Netherlands, New Zealand, Austria, Peru, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, USA, Venezuela) as the Mother's Day. The original date was when the activist Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis organized in 1865, the Mother's Friendship Days, to improved the conditions of the wounded of the War of Succession that struck the United States in the period.
However, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, was the one who conceived Mother's Day in honor of her mother Mary Ann, 2 (two) years after her death, on May 12, 1907. She created a memorial to his mother and began a campaign so it would be recognized as a holiday.
On May 8, 1914, she succeeded in doing that, it was approved the Joint Resolution Designating the Second Sunday in May Mother's Day by the U.S. Congress. The President of the United States, at the time, Thomas Winson proclaimed in the next day that during Mother's Day it would be placed flags on all public buildings. Thus, this date was celebrated for the first time, on May 9, 1914.
In Brazil, the second Sunday of May was formalized as Mother's Day by President Getúlio Vargas in 1932.
